The Gleadless and Heeley Neighbourhood Mental Health Centre is a new place where people can get help with their mental health. It will offer services to help people feel better and stay well. The centre will be open to everyone in the local community, including those who need support and their carers. It is a pilot programme funded by money from NHS England.

What is the pilot?

The pilot is a special project to try new ways of providing mental health services in the community. It aims to make it easier for people to get help close to home. The pilot will use ideas from other countries to create a better system for mental health care. The Gleadless and Heeley Neighbourhood Mental Health Centre is one of six pilots across England.

Where is it being located?

The centre will be located at Newfield Green in the Gleadless and Heeley neighbourhood. There will be two buildings:

  1. Library and Terry Wright Community Centre: The library and the Terry Wright Community Centre will continue to be part of the local community, accessible to all. The building will be refurbished to include space for mental health services. It will still be used by the community for other activities.
  2. Newfield Green Clinic: This building will be expanded to provide more rooms for mental health services. Rooms that are not currently in use will be utilised.

No community spaces will be removed from public use. The library and Terry Wright Community Centre will continue to be available for everyone.

What are the benefits?

The centre will offer lots of benefits, including:

  • Easy access to mental health services close to home.
  • Support for carers and families.
  • A safe place for people in crisis.
  • Better coordination between different health services.
  • Community involvement in designing and running the centre.

What services will be on offer?

One of the aims of the pilot is that it will make care simpler for people in Gleadless and Heeley. Teams that already offer mental health services in Sheffield will work together to deliver care at the new centre. This will simplify the way care is delivered and make it easier to access.

The teams that will work out of the new centre include:

  • Urgent and crisis team
  • Crisis Resolution & Home Treatment Team
  • Early Intervention Team
  • Older Adults CMHT
  • CERT Team
  • Community Mental Health Team (South Care Group 4)
  • Primary & Community Mental Health Team (Heeley Plus team)

When will this happen?

The centre will open in three phases. We are aiming for phase three to be completed by August 2025.

  • Phase 1: Newfield Green Clinic site opens. Service users will be seen from Monday to Friday at this time
  • Phase 2: Library/Community Centre site opens. Because we will have space at two sites we will be able to run services 24/7
  • Phase 3: Hospitality beds open

Who is in the partnership?

The centre is a partnership between several organisations, including:

  • Sheffield Health & Social Care NHS Foundation Trust
  • Primary Care Sheffield
  • Heeley Plus Primary Care Network
  • Heeley Trust
  • Synergy VCSE Mental Health Alliance
  • Rethink Mental Illness
  • Sheffield Flourish
  • Sheffield City Council
  • South Yorkshire Integrated Care System

How is it being funded?

The Gleadless and Heeley Neighbourhood Mental Health Centre is funded through a special pilot program by NHS England. The pilot has received approximately £5 million in funding for a two-year period. This money will be used for refurbishing the buildings, co-production work, and expanding existing services. The goal is to create a lasting impact even if the funding is not extended beyond the pilot period.

What work has been done with local community groups to help them understand the plans?

We have worked with local community groups to offer them the chance to influence the plans for the Terry Wright Community Centre.

Throughout April and May 2025 we have held one to one meetings with the groups and also public meetings. We have spoken to a range of groups to understand how they use the Terry Wright Community Centre and how our plans might impact them.

What has been done to ask people with mental health needs about the new service?

In March 2025 we ran a series of workshops for people with various mental health needs to help us inform our plans.

How can I find out more about the work you have done to talk to the local community?

We’ve produced a community engagement plan, so our actions are accountable to everyone. If you want to receive a copy of this document please contact: NeighbourhoodMHCentre@shsc.nhs.uk

Here are some of the most popular things you have asked about the pilot:

Will you change the name of the Terry Wright Community Centre?

There are no plans to change the name of the centre. We plan to run a service from the building but not rename it.

Will community groups have less space in the Terry Wright Community Centre?

The centre belongs to the community, and we will try to work with community groups to ensure they have space to do activities and store supplies and equipment.

Can you provide a separate entrance for your service at the back of the building?

We are looking at the plans to see if this can be accommodated.

What will happen to the building when the pilot finishes in two years?

We do not know the future funding arrangements at this time. But we will try to create a legacy for how the building can be used to support mental health services in Sheffield in the future.

Are the plans decided?

Throughout April and May 2025 we have listened to groups and people who use the community hall and we have adapted plans in direct feedback from groups. We are now awaiting the final costing from the builders for the jointly agreed plans.  We expect to have the costs by the end of May 2025. As soon as we know more information we will share with community groups.

How can I see all the feedback you have been given?

We have kept a log of feedback from our partners and community groups. If you would like a copy of our ‘you said, we did’ log, please contact NeighbourhoodMHCentre@shsc.nhs.uk
