We know that things aren't easy at the moment. Things have changed so much and we're all trying to get used to all the changes. It's okay to not be okay. 

If you're starting to feel down, low or worried, there's lots of different things you can try to help look after yourself. 

In this section you'll find lots of useful self-help resources written by mental health professionals which you can use for free. The great thing about these resources is that you can use them whenever you need. So whether that's reading one of our self-help guides, joining a local group or using some online tools, there's something for everyone.

Self-help guides

Self-help guides can be a great way to find out more about the way you're feeling.

Our guides cover a range of common mental health topics and can help you get to the bottom of what might be causing those feelings and teach you practical techniques you can use to try and help you.

There are loads of self-help resources that you can access for free online. Some of the resources are provided by  charities based in Sheffield, others are from organisations who work across the country. 

Resources have also been developed specifically to support you with the things you might be struggling with during Coronavirus.

Support based in Sheffield

  • Sheffield Mental Health Guide - this website is a great resource that pulls together all the NHS and charity run mental health support available in the city into one place. 
  • Sheffield Flourish - a charity organisation who run the Sheffield Mental Health Guide. They run a number of mental health groups in the city and have lots of support available on their website.
  • Sheffield Mind - another local charity who provide emotional and practical support to people living in Sheffield. 

Nationwide support

  • Anxiety UK - they provide practical support, advice and guidance on living with anxiety, with specific information on anxiety during Coronavirus. 
  • Every Mind Matters - this is a national campaign run by the NHS which gives you lots of useful advice on mental wellbeing, access to resources and even an app to help track your mood. 
  • Five Ways to Wellbeing - the five ways to wellbeing is based on evidence that there are five key ways to improve your mental health and wellbeing - connect with other people, be physically active, learn new skills, give to others and mindfulness. 
  • Mental Health Foundation - they are a national charity who provide tips on better mental health, how to look after yourself during Coronavirus and advice on day-to-day things that impact on our mental health such as housing, finances, employment and relationships. 
  • Stress Control - this is an online course used by NHS organisations across the country, including our very own IAPT service. 
  • Silverline - this is a free confidential helpline providing information, friendship and advice to older people which is available 24 hours a day, every day of the year. 

Apps

Using apps can be a great way to help improve your mental health. 

There are lots of apps out there that you can try for free, and others that you may have to pay for a subscription. Below are some free apps that we'd recommend trying:

  • Calm Harm - this app is designed to help you resist or manage the urge to self-harm
  • Catch It - learn how to manage feelings like anxiety and depression through looking at problems in a different way and turning negative thoughts into positive ones. 
  • My Possible Self - take control of your thoughts feeling and behaviour by learning simple skills to manage fear, anxiety and stress. 
  • Sleepio - an online sleep improvement programme for anyone who is struggling with falling asleep, or staying asleep during the night. 
  • SilverCloud - an online course to help you better manage stress, anxiety and depression.

Other things that may be impacting on your mental health

There are lots of things that can impact on our mental health, especially during this difficult period. 

When things go wrong it is understandable to feel down, stressed or worried. Below you'll find examples of the day-to-day things in life that can impact on your mental health, and places where you'll be able to find support:

  • Alcohol - during lockdown there has been a rise in the number of people drinking every day. Having a few drinks occasionally is absolutely fine, but if your drinking, or the drinking of a loved one, is starting to become a problem, we can help. Our Alcohol Service offer free support to help you cut down on your drinking and look at the reasons why you might be drinking in the first place. 
  • Domestic abuse - domestic abuse and sexual violence can have a crippling impact on your mental health. If you're suffering from domestic abuse please do not be frightened to ask for help. Independent Domestic Abuse Services (IDAS) is a charity who offer free, confidential support to anyone living in Sheffield. 
  • Drugs - taking drugs can make the symptoms of mental health problems worse, and may even make it more likely for you to develop mental health problems. We provide free support to anyone in the city who is taking opiate or non-opiate drugs and needs support. 
  • Feeling lonely - loneliness has a huge impact on our mental wellbeing, especially during lockdown. There are lots of projects and groups you can get involved with in Sheffield, including Age Better in Sheffield who can help you connect with your local community. 
  • Finances - dealing with money issues can be really stressful, especially if you're not sure how things like credit or mortgages work. Citizens Advice Sheffield have a wide range of support available to guide you through debt or money issues. 
  • Gambling - gambling addiction impacts on every aspect of your life. The combination of debt, a breakdown of relationships or loosing your job can really impact on your mental health. The NHS North Gambling Service provides free therapy to anyone living in Sheffield. 
  • Housing - having a place you can call home is really important to your mental health. Sheffield City Council's website has lots of information about council housing, housing association properties and supported housing for older people. There's also lots of advice on who to turn to if you're at risk of, or already are, homeless. 
  • Relationships - the people around us are a vital support network when times are tough. If your relationship with a partner, family or friends is strained it can make things really difficult, especially if you're already struggling. Relate South Yorkshire provide advice, counselling and workshops to help your relationships work better. 
  • Work - unemployment is one the most common causes of mental health difficulties. If you're struggling with not being able to find work or want to return to work, South Yorkshire Housing Association's 'Good Work' programme can help you find meaningful employment.

Mood self-assessment

If you're feeling down, but you're not sure what's causing you to feel that way, or you don't know what to do next the NHS has developed a mood self-assessment tool which can help you better understand how you're feeling. 

The tool involves answer a series of questions about how you're feeling, and then gives you advice on what to do next.
