Substance Misuse

Who are we?

The Substance Misuse Directorate helps Sheffield residents aged 18+ irrespective of the substance use to engage in clinical treatment interventions. We are a city-wide service linking into all hospitals, community mental health teams, prisons, and rehabilitation placements. The service operates in the community and within hospital settings and has five dedicated beds for inpatient admission for detoxification.

Help is given to:

  • Manage use safely (Harm reduction strategies)
  • Reduce use to safer limits (if health permitting)
  • Access alternative treatments
  • Support to discontinue use/become abstinent
  • Advice and education in relation to risk of using drugs/alcohol/medication
  • Referral onto mental health services for additional support

Our multidisciplinary clinical staff includes nurses, doctors, social workers and drug workers trained to work with people who have an addiction problem and all staff follow NHS rules on matters such as confidentiality. All clinicians receive on-going training to ensure a competent workforce is in place, which is able to deliver the required interventions according to national guidance and models of best practice. We are a multi-lingual service with clinicians speaking seven languages on site.

How is the service accessed?

If you would like to access this service, please discuss your needs with your General Practitioner (GP) or other professional involved In your care. Unfortunately at this time self-referrals are not accepted, however, telephone advice can be given during opening hours by contacting the enquiry line.

General Information

 

Community & Inpatient Detoxification

All our services offer community and inpatient detoxification options at assessment and as part of treatment reviews. All service users who undergo detoxification will receive clinical nurse specialist key work support to improve treatment effectiveness. All service users who wish to detoxify will receive clinical interventions, such as motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioural therapy and relapse prevention to support them in achieving positive outcomes. In some cases where the detoxification is started on an inpatient basis and clinical risk has been reduced, the detoxification is continued in the community with appropriate support.
All service users referred for inpatient detoxification will be supported to visit the ward pre-admission to ensure they are fully integrated into the care planning process

 

Overdose prevention

The harm reduction service through it's partner Turning Point will deliver the following interventions:

Overdose prevention training, including adult resuscitation to vulnerable service users

 

Medical Prescribing Service

The clinics are led by Consultant Psychiatrists who have a special interest in the field of alcohol and drugs. The clinics offer the following services:

  • Assessment and review done by the same doctor to ensure continuity of care
  • Discussion of your diagnosis
  • Discussion of medication options and treatment options
  • Physical examination where appropriate
  • Interpretation of investigations (bloods and urines results) and medication review
  • Assessment of co-morbidity of psychiatric illnesses (alcohol dementia, clinical depression, psychosis, anxiety, post traumatic stress disorder)
  • Assessment of physical complications of alcohol withdrawal
  • Referral to mental health services
  • Assessment of inpatient admissions
  • Medication reviews for GPs and other specialists
  • Titration of medication/s
