Sheffield Eating Disorders Service is a community based specialist out patient service, providing assessment and psychologically based interventions to those with severe eating disorders. The Team is multi disciplinary and includes:
Many of the staff work into the Team on a part time basis and hence there is the equivalent of 3.5 clinical staff.
Following referral an assessment is offered to clients who meet our referral criteria. The aim of the assessment is for the client to think about their eating disorder and how it is impacting on their life and health. Following the assessment all new clients are discussed within the Team and a report is sent to the client and other professionals involved in their care outlining the Care Plan.
If it is jointly agreed that further input from Sheffield Eating Disorders Service is appropriate, there may be a waiting period before this can start. In this instance the Team aims to offer support, monitoring and guidance while the client is on a waiting list for psychological therapy. Therapies offered by the Team are informed by Cognitive Behavioral and Cognitive Analytic Therapy as well as Motivational Interviewing. We also offer support and information to families and carers and family members are involved in treatment where this is deemed to be helpful
We work closely with GPs and Primary Care staff who have an important role in monitoring the physical complications of eating disorders. We also work closely with Sector Mental Health Teams, in patient areas and with South Yorkshire Eating Disorders Association who provide additional support services including a telephone helpline.
